A Simple Guide To WalletConnect

What Is WalletConnect?

WalletConnect is an open-source protocol that enables a remote and encrypted communications link between decentralized applications (DApps) and your mobile wallet application via QR code scanning or deep linking.

WalletConnect’s website defines it as “the communications protocol for web3 [that] brings the ecosystem together by enabling wallets and apps to securely connect and interact.”

Why Was WalletConnect Created?

WalletConnect helps an app communicate with compatible wallets without requiring a separate integration for each one. The available networks and request types still depend on both the app and wallet.

WalletConnect was created by Pedro Gomes in 2018, to provide native support so that DApp developers can create software that works across devices and different wallet applications without the need for custom compatibility development.

Since its inception, WalletConnect has become a leading wallet infrastructure protocol in the Web3 ecosystem.

How Does It Work?

Scan the dApp’s WalletConnect QR code or open its connection link in a compatible wallet. Review the requested accounts and networks before approving the session. Current WalletConnect uses relay infrastructure for encrypted messages; the bridge servers described in older guides belonged to v1. Signing takes place in the wallet.

Should you encounter any difficulties while linking your crypto wallet to WalletConnect, a situation that can occasionally occur, it’s advised to revisit the beginning and go through the process again step by step. Moreover, before initiating the process, confirm that your mobile crypto wallet is indeed compatible with WalletConnect.

Is It Safe?

WalletConnect establishes a secure, encrypted link by using a shared key between two peers, which in this context refers to devices or wallets.

WalletConnect encrypts messages and does not ask you to share private keys. You still need to assess the app and each request: a connection, a message signature and a token-spending approval give different permissions.

Still, be VERY careful!

A connection alone is not a transfer or token-spending approval. A malicious dApp can instead ask you to sign a harmful transaction, approval or permission-bearing message. Read each request before signing. Disconnecting the session does not revoke existing on-chain token allowances; review and revoke unwanted allowances separately.

Fraudsters use diverse strategies to deceive individuals, often masquerading as credible sources on platforms like social media. They target newcomers in the crypto and DeFi sectors, many of whom lack foundational knowledge. Leveraging this, these deceivers use complex industry terms, sometimes nonsensically, to impress and manipulate these users.

A scam can begin with a convincing investment story and end with a connection or signature request. Verify the service independently and inspect the actual permissions; familiar branding or a working connection is not enough.

Advantages of WalletConnect

  • Private keys are not part of WalletConnect session messages. The wallet signs requests locally, while the user remains responsible for reviewing what is being authorized.

  • WalletConnect supports connections between compatible wallets and apps. The available chains, methods and sessions depend on the participating implementations.

  • WalletConnect offers a user-friendly experience by simplifying the process of interaction between DApps and wallets. This simplicity helps to make blockchain technology more approachable and accessible to a wider audience.

Disadvantages & Challenges

  • Connectivity depends on relay availability and compatible wallet and dApp implementations. An outage can interrupt requests even when funds remain on-chain.

  • WalletConnect enables interaction with a multitude of DApps. This also exposes users to potentially hazardous or harmful DApps.

  • Pause when a request is unclear. Confirm the domain, account, network and requested action before signing.

Conclusion

The connection is one part of using a dApp. Verify the app, understand the request and distinguish closing a session from revoking an on-chain token approval.

WalletConnect is now fully integrated into Unitywallet.
