Artificial intelligence & crypto

AI-related crypto projects cover data, computing, model development and software agents. This guide uses examples first selected in July 2023, with later token changes noted where relevant. It is a historical selection, not a live market ranking.
What’s an AI Cryptocurrency?
“AI coins” is a broad market label for cryptoassets associated with AI, data or computing projects. The label does not mean that a token itself uses AI or that every project improves security, scalability or investment results.
These new cryptocurrencies support AI-driven projects such as decentralized marketplaces, market predictions, and portfolio management. AI-powered tokens also grant governance rights to holders, making transactions easier within the ecosystem. AI can recognize illegal activities, analyze markets, find investment opportunities, and be used for other purposes.
The most prominent AI currencies are blockchain platforms like The Graph and SingularityNET. Users spend tokens to use these platforms and take advantage of their integrated artificial intelligence.
The examples below reflect the project selection first published in July 2023, with important token changes noted alongside it.
The Graph (GRT)
The Graph is a decentralised protocol that indexes and organizes data efficiently using distributed ledger technology and GraphQL language. It eliminates intermediaries and uses subgraphs to retrieve data from the blockchain, making it similar to how Google indexes the web.
The Graph network’s native token is GRT. It’s used to allocate resources and is an ERC-20 crypto token that can be stored in ETH and other ERC-20 wallets.
GRT has ongoing issuance and token burns. Its total and circulating supplies change over time, so the initial 10 billion allocation is different from a fixed maximum.
SingularityNET (legacy AGIX; ASI/FET transition)
SingularityNET provides a marketplace for AI services. Its developer documentation describes a transition from legacy AGIX support to ASI (FET) infrastructure. Asset identity, network and conversion availability need to be checked for the specific service being used.
Developers can earn from AI solutions and models without creating complete apps for end users. They can also purchase AI solutions and models to incorporate into their apps.
Fetch.ai (FET)
Fetch.ai focuses on software agents and related infrastructure. FET was also used for the ASI Alliance token-merger process announced in 2024. The original 2023 market valuation is not a current quote.
Ocean Protocol (Ocean)
Ocean Protocol develops data-sharing and monetization tools. OCEAN appeared in the original 2023 list; the project and token have since been involved in migration and organizational changes. A historical ticker entry is not confirmation of current utility, exchange support or conversion availability.
iExec RLC (RLC)
iExec provides decentralized computing and data-related services, with RLC used in its marketplace. Its appearance in this historical list should not be read as a current ranking or price estimate.
Numeraire (NMR)
Numerai uses machine-learning models in a hedge-fund setting. NMR supports its model-staking and incentive system; holding NMR is not the same as owning a share of the hedge fund or receiving its investment returns.
dKargo (DKA)
dKargo appeared in the 2023 selection as a blockchain-based logistics project. Its services and token use need to be assessed through current project information.
Phala Network (PHA)
Phala develops decentralized computing and confidentiality-related infrastructure. PHA was the token named in the original survey; service availability and token use should be checked against the project’s current documentation.
Covalent (CXT; formerly CQT)
Covalent supplies blockchain data infrastructure. In August 2024 it announced completion of the CQT-to-CXT migration and stated that CQT was deprecated for network utility, staking, security and governance. The former CQT price and market capitalization do not describe CXT today.
Cortex (CTXC)
Cortex appeared in the 2023 selection as a project exploring AI-model execution in blockchain applications.
Original project selection: July 13, 2023. This is a historical set of examples, not a live ranking. Before transacting, verify current project documentation, token contracts, networks and exchange support.
How Do I Buy AI Cryptocurrencies?
Availability varies by token, network, exchange and jurisdiction. Verify whether the asset is current or a legacy token, and review liquidity, fees and eligibility before placing an order.
To start trading, you need to open an account, which often involves identity verification steps, and deposit some fiat currency. Afterward, navigate to the page of the AI cryptocurrency you want to buy within the exchange, enter the desired amount, and execute the trade.
How Do I Store AI Cryptocurrencies?
An exchange account and a self-custodial wallet place control of the keys in different hands. Before withdrawing, check support for the exact asset and network. For self-custody, protect the recovery backup and review signatures carefully; hardware alone does not prevent every harmful approval.
Are AI Cryptocurrencies Safe?
The safety of AI cryptocurrencies, both from hackers and from the volatility of the crypto market, depends on how they are stored and your attitude towards risk. No cryptocurrency is safe from market instability, and 2022 was the year in which the volatility of crypto was laid bare.
For hackers, crypto wallets and exchanges are likely to remain targets for criminals, leaving people’s assets at the mercy of the security measures they and their exchanges employ.
