The Differences between DEXs & CEXs

Centralized exchanges and decentralized trading protocols differ in custody, execution and access. The 2022 FTX collapse made those differences concrete, but neither model removes the need to understand fees and risks.

Let’s define what we’re talking about first. DEX is a decentralized exchange, while CEX is a centralized exchange, and the differences matter hugely.

It is also worth noting that the foundational ethos driving Web3 technologies and DeFi (decentralized finance) is decentralization, i.e., no one body or group should retain controlling power over the many, and it is the many, collectively, who should yield the power.

This philosophy directly results from financial institutions and technology businesses amassing too much control of our money, data, and privacy and generally acting like or being monopolies.

Therefore, decentralization is an antidote to corporate and financial tyranny and is likely why they are gaining popularity.

What is a DEX?

A DEX enables crypto trading through blockchain-based protocols. It is not a general-purpose bank or a substitute for wallet storage. Fiat purchases and withdrawals usually involve a separate provider.

DEXs commonly use smart contracts to execute trades. Their interfaces, upgrade keys, governance and other dependencies can still introduce centralized points of control.

A DEX is not automatically cheaper or faster. Compare pool and protocol fees, network gas, price impact and slippage with a CEX’s trading spread and withdrawal charges. Public transaction ordering can also expose trades to MEV, including sandwich attacks.

Users generally retain wallet keys, but assets committed to a contract are governed by its rules. Bugs, unavailable liquidity or network disruption can affect access. Self-custody does not guarantee immediate withdrawal from every position.

Some DEX protocols can be used without an account, while interfaces and connected providers may apply access restrictions or identity checks. Public transactions remain traceable; using a DEX does not guarantee anonymity.

Blockchain validation checks protocol rules, not whether a trade is wise or a contract is safe. Users must review addresses, approvals and contract risks. Support arrangements vary, and a community moderator cannot reverse an on-chain trade.

What is a CEX?

A centralized crypto exchange is a business that runs an account-based trading service. Many maintain order books and provide deposits and withdrawals. Licensing, oversight and customer protections vary by operator and jurisdiction.

CEXs provide customers with four specific services: order matching, clearing, safe-keeping of your assets, i.e., custodian, and centralized customer service and support.

A CEX aggregates the orders placed in its order book and uses its underlying technologies to match and execute the specific buy or sell order.

CEXs charge according to their own fee schedules. Compare the full cost of a trade and withdrawal rather than assuming centralized execution is always more expensive.

CEXs act as custodians for your assets and private security keys. If there is a significant liquidity issue where many customers try to withdraw their assets, your access might be restricted. Conversely, if the CEX is hacked and compromised, your private security keys could be accessed and used to steal your assets.

Many exchanges require identity verification and apply compliance controls. Check the provider’s actual jurisdiction, permissions and terms rather than assuming every CEX offers the same protection.

Both models remain in use. The appropriate choice depends on the transaction, available liquidity, custody needs and the user’s ability to manage the risks.

Unitywallet provides self-custodial wallet tools. Keeping your own keys removes reliance on an exchange’s custody, while making secure backups, device protection and careful signing your responsibility.
