Exchange Custody and Self-Custody: Different Risks
·
2 min. read
An exchange account can make trading convenient while leaving custody with the provider. Understanding that dependency helps distinguish an account balance from direct control of the wallet keys.
1. You Don’t Own the Keys
The exchange normally controls the custody keys and processes withdrawals. Technical failures, restrictions or a security incident can affect access even when the account still shows a balance.
The golden rule of crypto still stands: “Not your keys, not your crypto.”
2. Exchanges Can Fail — Even the Big Ones
History has shown that no platform is immune to risk. From Mt. Gox to FTX, users have lost billions in assets because exchanges operated like banks — centralized, opaque, and vulnerable to collapse.
Even with strong reputations, exchanges remain a single point of failure in a decentralized world.
3. Security Breaches Happen
Centralized exchanges can suffer breaches, operational failures or loss of customer assets.
Self-custody avoids relying on their custody, but introduces risks such as lost backups, stolen keys and harmful signatures.
The safer arrangement depends on the controls and responsibilities you can reliably manage.
4. Withdrawals Can Be Restricted Anytime
Exchanges can freeze or limit withdrawals due to internal policies, regulations, or even liquidity shortages.
When this happens, users find out too late that they don’t actually control their money — someone else does.
5. Self-Custody Means True Ownership
A self-custodial wallet lets you control signing keys.
That also makes backup, device security and permission review your responsibility. Existing token approvals can allow later spending without a new prompt for every transfer.
Self-custody does not make public-chain activity private.
Final Thoughts
Exchanges can be useful for trading, while self-custody offers direct key control. Choose deliberately: review the provider’s custody terms or prepare a secure recovery backup before holding funds yourself.
Neither option guarantees access, privacy or protection from every threat.
